Hello everyone, and here we are. So, these are the reasons that drove me to self-publish. When I finished writing the novel and had it corrected, it was ready to be sent to free publishers to see if it piqued any interest, without having too many expectations. In just over four years, I sent twenty-four emails. For those who don't know, each publishing house has its own process for submitting manuscripts for evaluation and its own timeframe, which can be a month, two, four, or more. In any case, I always waited for a response or the time frame they'd indicated for contacting me; after which, I'd send another email to the next C.E. And during those months of waiting, I'd even forget about the emails I'd sent, until I found an email from that very C.E. in my inbox. At that point, I was all excited; then, after opening and reading the email, with my ears down, like a cocker spaniel, I'd say, "Okay, let's try another one." Out of twenty-four publishing houses, however, six showed interest in the manuscript, so they said, because in the end, four of them asked me for money, like one hundred or two hundred euros. So I went to check out their website because I thought I'd seen it wrong, but no, it actually said "Non-paying publishing houses." You get the idea, right? How the world turns. Okay, let's move on. While one would have published it for free, it asked me to advertise locally, such as book presentations, communication campaigns, and so on, at my expense, and so it always comes back to the same thing. But the last one, perhaps, is the funniest: it would have published it for free, period. Wow, they'd already sent me the contract to sign for four years free, but after reading the contract carefully, one thing was missing: there was no selling price. I kindly contacted them to have them set a starting price or a range price to get an idea. Oh dear! The email response sounded like I'd asked for something truly extraordinary. But that response was also a good thing, and you'll soon understand why. From then on, I said, "Can you show me some pay-to-publish publishers or platforms that might be right for me?" So I identified the ones where I'd like to publish my book. So, first, I bought a few books from them, also to see how they worked, and this was another godsend, because when I read those books, I realized I could publish my own, too. Sure, I know, mine isn't a masterpiece either, but I've seen worse, so I said, "You know what? I'll publish it myself." And when I sent the email that I'd purchased a publishing package, there was no turning back. And it was a wonderful journey; there, too, I met fantastic professionals who never made me feel burdened, and that's not a given. During the journey, I realized I was creating the book the way I wanted it, from the book format to the cover, including the paper: it was all in my hands. If they'd published it for free, I'd never have had the last word, or maybe even the first, so it was better that way. Now I'll say goodbye and see you in the next post. Bye-bye.
